Off to Amsterdam – Shuttle at ISE 2017

On 7 February 2017, the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) trade show will be staged in what is now its 14th year. The world’s largest and fastest-growing trade show for AV technology and electrical systems will be taking place as usual at Amsterdam’s RAI Convention Centre in the heart of the Dutch capital. With 135 new exhibitors in an exhibition space which has been expanded by around 3,000 square metres, this year’s show will be the biggest so far.

Mini PC manufacturer provides compact multi-display PC solutions for displaying 4K media

Over a total of four successive exhibition days, visitors to the trade show, which runs through to 10 February 2017, can expect to find a wide range of innovations from more than 900 global companies covering automation, content management, LED lighting technology, multimedia control systems, professional audio solutions right through to video projectors and displays.

The focus for Shuttle will be on the area of digital signage. As well as the latest developments in the world of mini PCs, Shuttle also has brand-new platforms for the POI segment up its sleeve.

This will be the fifth year in a row that Shuttle has been at the show, and in previous years it was able to gain a wealth of experience and make new contacts. At the exhibition stand in Hall 8 the trade crowd can expect to find a cross section of the Shuttle XPC product range. Particular highlights to look forward to include solutions offering the option to connect up to three high-resolution 4K monitors.

Another main focus at the trade show will be on particularly energy-saving versions which operate completely fanlessly. Both the XPC slim Barebone DX30, which is based on the Intel Apollo Lake architecture, and the even smaller Android-based XPC nano Barebones NS02A and NS02E represent this product family. But all three models boast plentiful power reserves that make it possible to control even 4K monitors with ease. The advantages of fanless operation are obvious – the devices are almost maintenance-free and operate quietly.

The most powerful model this year is the XPC cube Barebone SZ170R8V2. Not only does it accommodate large graphics cards such as the GeForce GTX 1080, it also offers plenty of space for up to 64 GB of DDR4 memory and up to four 3.5 inch drives. Two Intel network interfaces and an M.2 slot for fast NVMe memory cards round out the package. A BIOS update that will be available shortly will make the SZ170R8V2 futureproof and compatible with Intel’s newest “Kaby Lake” generation of processors.

All XPC solutions from Shuttle feature the proven Barebone concept and rely on flexibility, compactness, robustness and easy configuration.

DX30: The new-generation fanless PC

Elmshorn, Germany, 2017-01-13 – Ever since a fanless PC was first launched on the market, they have exerted a certain fascination. When Shuttle unveiled the very first model of its type to the public in the form of the XS35 in 2010, this heralded the start of a whole series of silent solutions that are cooled by purely passive means and do not have a fan. This facilitated possible applications that were previously inconceivable. At the time, the fanless PCs from Shuttle actually made many things possible for the very first time. Now, to mark the start of a new year, a completely new generation is being launched.

– Intel Apollo Lake microarchitecture
– Power consumption of just 7 Watt
– Suitable for 12 and 19 Volt installations
– Can be used horizontally for the first time

The first representative, the XPC Barebone DX30 from the “XPC slim” family, relies on the Intel Apollo Lake microarchitecture with a 14 nm design. The barebone boasts a powerful Intel Celeron processor J3355 (dual-core, 2 MB cache, up to 2.5 GHz) and provides room for 8 GB of DDR3L memory. A 2.5 inch drive (HDD or SSD) with SATA 6 Gbit/s and an NVMe SSD (M.2-2280) can be installed as a mass storage device. The outer dimensions of the black chassis are 19 x 16.5 x 4.3 cm (LWH), thus producing a volume of roughly 1.35 litres.

“With the DX30 we are opening a new chapter. An expansion in possible applications, a robust steel chassis and the price point make it more attractive than ever,” says Tom Seiffert, Head of Marketing & PR at Shuttle Computer Handels GmbH. “Two model series, that of the XS35 and that of the XS36, will be replaced by DX30.”

On the outside, spread across the front and back, the user has access to 1x HDMI, 1x DisplayPort, 2x USB 3.0, 4x USB 2.0, a card reader, 1x RJ45, 1x PS/2 and 2x RS-232. The PVG01 adapter cable, which is available separately, can be used to replace one of the serial interfaces with an additional VGA slot.

The soldered-on Intel Celeron processor J3355 contains an Intel HD Graphics 500 graphics unit which via DisplayPort enables smooth 4K playback at 60 Hz and can address up to three monitor connections simultaneously (DisplayPort, HDMI and VGA).

The DX30 is supplied with an interchangeable WLAN module (in the M.2-2230 slot) with an external antenna. Gigabit LAN is also present via the RJ45 port with an Intel i211 Ethernet Controller. In addition to Wake-on LAN, the new model can also be started via a remote power-on connection. If a specific jumper is removed on the mainboard, the device always starts automatically as soon as it is supplied with power.

Power is supplied by an external 19 Volt power adapter delivering 40 Watt. Alternatively, power can also be supplied from another power source with 12 Volt DC. The tolerance here is +/-5 % in each case. When the device is running, the power consumption is barely 7 Watt.

Previously, the fanless models in the “XPC slim” family were only designed for vertical operation. This is now changing with the sales launch of the latest member of the family. The new housing and the amount of waste heat, which has been reduced again, now permit horizontal usage, even in 24/7 permanent operation. The ambient temperature can be 0-40°C.

The areas of application of the DX30 are as varied as the range of conceivable installation sites and mounting options. Numerous M3 threaded holes are available for example for installation flat on a desk in the office, mounted on a digital signage display using the VESA bracket that is also supplied, or for individual attachment concepts.

A short film about the product shows 360° views of the device and sheds light on key details: https://youtu.be/VoEddb3C8Y0

The recommended retail price from Shuttle for the DX30 is EUR 172.00 (excluding VAT). This model is available from specialist retailers Europe-wide upon publication of this press release.

Shuttle extends its XPC nano product range with four new models

Elmshorn, Germany, 1 November 2016 – Following the launch of the NC01 series in a typical NUC format, the Shuttle XPC nano product range is growing once again. The NC02 models are the immediate successors and put the sixth generation of Intel Core processors in a micro-format.

– New versions available ranging from energy-saving Intel Celeron to Core i7 processors
– USB 3.0 Type C, more memory and extended drive support included

The NC02 models are sold as barebones PC as standard which include the case, mainboard, heatpipe cooling system and power supply unit as key components. Four different models with soldered Celeron, Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 power-saving processors are available to cover as many application areas as possible.

The base model NC02U is driven by an Intel Celeron 3855U dual-core processor clocked at 2x 1.6 GHz. The 14 nm architecture as well as the power consumption of less than 10 Watt in operation promise low energy consumption and enhanced performance.

With its ultra-slim dimensions of 141 x 141 x 42 mm, the housing is 13 mm taller compared to the NC01, enabling the units to support even 15 mm high 2.5” drives.

If you undo the two screws on the covers of the completely black case with its brushed aluminium top panel, you will find space for one 2.5” hard drive or SSD. Two SO-DIMM slots can be fitted with up to a total of 32 GB DDR3L RAM. Moreover, the NC02 models all have a free M.2-2280 expansion slot with PCI Express interface, which supports next-gen NVMe cards in addition to M.2 SSDs measuring up to 80 mm in length. A second M.2 slot is equipped with a WLAN module, which can be replaced if necessary.

Furthermore, the NC02 models also feature a full-size DisplayPort, HDMI, Intel Gigabit Ethernet and USB on the rear, as well as an RS-232 port on the side. The front panel is completed by a bootable card reader and both a USB 3.0 Type A and C port.

The interior reveals a low-noise, fan-controlled heatpipe cooling system that depends on system load and ambient temperature.

Fluent playback of ultra HD 4K content (3840 x 2160 pixels) is guaranteed all across the NC02 range right from the version with Celeron. The image signal is transmitted smoothly at 60 Hz via DisplayPort and at 30 Hz via HDMI.

“Barely more than a year ago, XPC nano was launched in the form of the NC01 models. Since then, demand for this form factor has continued to rise. We have listened to our customers and translated their suggestions into real products. A new fan control, USB 3.0 Type C and NVMe support are just a few examples of this,” explains Tom Seiffert, Head of Marketing & PR at Shuttle Computer Handels GmbH. “We look forward to being able to offer a performance-enhanced and versatile platform with the NC02, which essentially can be used wherever efficient, quiet operation and durability are called for.”

All models can be operated in various positions: e.g. upright on the aluminium pedestal provided or mounted on different surfaces and suitable monitors using the supplied VESA mount.

Shuttle pressemeddelelse: High-performance Mini-PC for large graphics cards and four hard disks

Official Shuttle Press Release: 2016-03-10

High-performance Mini-PC for large graphics cards and four hard disks

Elmshorn, Germany, 2016-03-10 – Up to now mini-PCs have been designed in classic cube format for three drives, normally two hard disks/SSDs and an optical drive. A new type of case is being launched today that breaks through these restrictions. The SZ170R8 in R8 case design accommodates four 3.5″ drives and does away with the need for an optical drive bay.

– Supports 64 GB DDR4 memory and 6th generation Intel Core processors
– Can be used as a storage server, high-performance workstation or compact gaming PC

This structural modification also enables larger graphics cards to be installed. More free space has been created inside the aluminium case. This has also resulted in benefits in terms of easier installation, better cooling and increased compatibility with very large graphics cards.

With four possible hard disks in the SZ170R8, reliable cooling of the machine is of course vital. The heatpipe-based cooling system has therefore been expanded to include a second fan fitted to the front of the case. This device sucks in fresh air through a large opening in the front panel and directs it over all four hard disks, thus preventing a build-up of heat.

Another feature of the R8 design, which immediately catches the eye, is the increased number of significantly larger vents on either side of the machine. This change is a response to the more demanding requirements of modern graphics cards. Dual-slot cards with large heatsinks and powerful fans now receive more fresh air and work more reliably and quietly.

Despite all the modifications, the external dimensions of the new model have remained the same, measuring 33.2 x 21.6 x 19.8 cm (DWH).

The installation of graphics/expansion cards in the two PCI-Express slots is made easier thanks to a detachable locking device on the rear opening. The SZ170R8 features 1x PCI-Express-x16-3.0, 1x PCI-Express-x4-3.0, 1x M.2-2280 (PCIe, SATA, NVMe) and 1x Mini-PCI-Express-x1-2.0 (half size).

The mainboard developed and pre-installed by Shuttle is equipped with an Intel Z170 chipset and supports 6th generation Intel Core processors (TDP max. 95 W). It accommodates 4x DDR4 memory slots up to a total of 64 GB and has an M.2 slot e.g. for PCIe-SSDs. Further features include 2x DisplayPort, HDMI, 4x SATA 6 Gbit/s with RAID, eSATA, 8x USB 3.0, 7.1 audio and Intel Gigabit Ethernet.

The power supply comes from a 500 W, 80-PLUS-certified power unit, which constantly provides the SZ170R8 with sufficient energy to meet the requirements of a fully-equipped machine.

“As a compact barebone, this little powerhouse is unique on the market,” says Tom Seiffert, Head of Marketing & PR at Shuttle Computer Handels GmbH. “In particular, demanding users and those looking for a custom solution for out-of-the-ordinary applications will find the new R8 design attractive.”

Optional accessories include a 2.5″ HDD/SSD installation frame (PHD3), COM port (H-RS232) as well as WLN-C and WLN-M WLAN modules.

Shuttle’s recommended retail price for the XPC Barebone SZ170R8 is EUR 322.00 (ex VAT). At the time of publication of this press release the specified model was available from retailers.
